Kaba Modern ’12

21 Oct

A little while ago, I had the amazing opportunity to once again shoot the current Kaba Modern team (hip hop dance crew based a UC Irvine that also had members representing the crew on MTV’s, America’s Best Dance Crew).

Sylvia G Photography - Kaba Modern

Shooting Kaba Modern is always fun because of the great people on the team – each and every one of them works very hard to make the shoot a success. I also love how they want to bring concepts and theme into their shoots as well. This year was a mafia theme and they had everything from guns to long cigarette holders. It was great getting to shoot some of the same people I have shot in previous years but it’s always exciting to meet and shoot the new members. Although they all say they are so awkward in front of the camera and have no idea what they’re doing, they have to be lying because they always come out looking great (and they all seem to have a lot of fun as opposed to being overly nervous). I love seeing the team grow as dancers, individuals, and seeing how different they are at these shoots once they are veterans and start killing it in front of the camera.

Aside from the themed look, we usually shoot a more personal, casual look as well.

Dancer, dance a little faster – Ingenious Fashion

19 Oct

Sylvia G Photography - Ingenious Fashion

As many of you know, I love photographing dancers so it was a no-brainer when the talented designer Joey Thao asked me to photograph a collection of fantastic dancers for his brand, Ingenious Fashion.

IF’s pieces are unique and funky yet easy to move in and are body conscious – things that every dancer looks for, especially when it comes to auditioning in LA. It was such a treat working with Joey (as always), Mindii, and the talented dancers (Karen, Kasey, Natalie, Ragon, and Amber). Dancers have a different awareness of movement and their body than models which is why it’s always interesting and fun to shoot with them. We really wanted them to bring their own dance styles into this shoot since each piece is as different as each dancer is.

Poreotics

2 Mar

Had a lot of fun shooting Poreotics (MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew Season 5 champions).

While they have been going with the “robotic” theme for a while, these guys really wanted to showcase their HUGE personalities for this shoot. They are funny guys with tons of energy and I wanted to bring that out as well as their individual, quirky personalities.

Big thanks to Danny and Jenny for your guidance, support, and styling during the shoot.

Also a huge thanks to my assistant Jerrel for being the best assistant as usual. 🙂

S2K

21 Dec

S2K, or Style 2 Kill, is a new all-female dance project that encompasses many styles of dance.
They have an awesome roster of ridiculously talented ladies and it was great getting to work with a group of girl dancers (since recently I’ve been shooting lots of male dance crews).

I was super excited about the concept that Janice came up with. We decided to go with a multi-bird theme – matching the personalities of each girl in the group into a type of bird (eagles, peacocks, and robins). Hikari and Janice put together a perfect team together and planned out the shoot super well. AMAZING job to the hairstylists, Jasmine Chang and Marshall Bang, for their hard work – I was amazed at how much you two did in such a short period of time. So much planning and hard work was put into this shoot so I’m glad everything ended up being pretty amazing.

Thank you girls for being so easy and fun to work with!

And thank you Deyo for filming the shoot! See the video from the shoot here:

And a big thank you to Kenny for assisting me for the day (making sure I had water and cough drops since I was sick).

AKM [Florida]

7 Dec

Haven’t had a chance to blog about my last trip to Florida.

Went to Gainesville with Instant Noodles for Asian Kaleidoscope Month’s Closing Ceremony to perform alongside Kina Grannis and Kevin Shea.

Sylvia G Photography - Instant Noodles Crew
This was my first time in Florida and I had a really great experience! It was a pretty relaxing trip – everything was planned really well so the guys and myself didn’t feel the anxiety that we sometimes feel on the road. We also had the opportunity to make a whole bunch of new friends – Thanks a TON for all the eboard for such a fun time and for Chin Chin & Min for taking such good care of us and housing us!

I expected the weather to be similar to LA (especially after checking the weather before leaving) but it ended up being freakishly cold. Totally unprepared yet again. I guess I should start packing for all sorts of weather when I travel instead of what the weather says it should be!

Went to the Samuel Harn Museum which had a collection of artwork that I really enjoyed! They made a new Asian/AsianAm wing which I loved.
Contemporary Japanese Ceramics exhibit – super gorgeous pieces.

We also frolicked with some gators in a swamp while in Florida. These were so cute.

Fresher Apparel

6 Dec

Did a fun mini-shoot with Instant Noodles Crew for a new up-and-coming clothing company, Fresher Apparel.

Fresher is a new clothing brand and lifestyle coming out of the Bay Area. With quality as a high priority and fresh design in mind, we aim to provide apparel so you can stay Fresher.

Whats a better way to showcase some fresh clothes than with some fresh dancing?

Instant Noodles Crew – Lifestyle

29 Nov

The most recent non-gig shoot that I did with Instant Noodles Crew was more of a lifestyle shoot.
Definitely wanted to do something a little different. Something a little less commercial, a little more GQ, and a lot more flavor, showcasing their personalities as well as different looks.
These guys have bright, fun personalities and they roll as a big family. We wanted to bring that vibe to this shoot and although this is still used for promo, we wanted something different from the typical, posed dancer promo photos.

I was deathly sick during this shoot (fever and everything) so I’m a little amazed at how they turned out. Thanks to the boys for being so patient even though I was snappy and snotty. I love you boys. ❤

To all the INC fans, the boys will be in Taiwan visiting family and stuff for most of December so the last gig is on December 3rd for The Bridge! We have many exciting things lined up for 2012 and we can’t wait to share all these experiences with you guys! If you want us to go out where you are, help us make it happen. (:
